DMD have undertaken lighting and electrical design on hundreds of sports facility projects throughout Canada and the US. We design projects to meet the needs of players and the local community.
DMD prepare well detailed plans, specifications and estimates tailored specifically to sports lighting projects. We coordinate the supply of power from local electrical utilities and undertake all required coordination of the service locations.
We have extensive knowledge of all modern athletic field lighting equipment and requirements. DMD staff have undertaken projects ranging from recreation to major league sports including lighting for television broadcasts.
We are fully familiar with current standards for the design of athletic field Illumination. DMD are active members of the Illuminating Engineers Society of North America (IESNA) Sports Lighting Committee and are directly involved with production and ongoing updates to the IESNA Sports Lighting Recommended Practice. Our knowledge and insight of the standards allows us to refine our designs and apply the right amount of lighting for each facility.
Our staff have been on the forefront of “Green Design” by considering energy efficiency and new state of art lighting controls in our designs all aimed at reducing power and operating costs. To this end we have developed performance specifications to obtain the best overall value for the owner.
Designing the lighting for sports facilities requires a balance between meeting the needs of the players and reducing light trespass on local resident. DMD understand light trespass impact issues on local residents are how they can be best mitigated. For outdoor installations bright light sources set against a dark background often cast nuisance glare on local residents. DMD utilize innovative methods to assess and reduce the brightness of the light sources, thus reducing impacts.
DMD staff often participate in public open house sessions addressing issues and concerns related to spill light and glare issues brought forward by local residents. DMD assist in any public consultation related to impacts of the lights on local residents. Following the installation we often meet with local residents working with installers to re-aim offensive luminaires, and thus reduce impacts.
We assist owners in the process of incorporating features into their facilities that optimize and enhance its total operation. One main complaint from local residents is the sports lighting being on when nobody is present. We have worked with suppliers to refine innovative lighting controls with interface with facility scheduling software for better control. We work closely with parks programming, operations and maintenance staff to determine the most suitable options to control field and security lighting.
We work with clients to determine if special considerations are needed to integrate planned or anticipated future amenities. Amenities may include scoreboards, irrigation controls, convenience outlets for pitching machines or concessions carts, public address systems (PA), restrooms, clubhouses, or other features. Where required our designs include additional ducting to accommodate future amenities.
DMD typically design facilities with additional lighting to allow players to safely leave the facility after a game and provide a level of lighting and security around the facility.
Following the installation DMD undertake a detailed site review and provide a list of deficiencies. In addition, DMD measure and document the actual lighting levels to verify lighting requirements have been achieved. We also provide record and Operation and Maintenance Manuals for operations staff.
