DarkSky International Validation

DMD undertook on-site and off site light level measurements at the Carmel Highschool football field in California (on behalf of the DarkSky International) in order to validate DarkSky requirements were met. Based on the assessment report provided by DMD the DarkSky International issued certification that requirements were met. DarkSky International (https://darksky.org/) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to protect communities from the harmful effects of light pollution through outreach, advocacy, and conservation. As part of their work the DarkSky International has developed an outdoor sports lighting review and certification program (https://darksky.org/what-we-do/darksky-approved/outdoor-sports-lighting/). The cost is typically built into the supplier’s cost. The end result is a certificate certifying the lighting meets stringent requirements which is of value to many...

Sailor Bar and Saddle Rock Tunnel Lighting, BC Fraser Canyon

The existing tunnels are located on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) north of Hope BC. The tunnels were constructed in the late 1950’s. In 2019, DMD undertook a condition assessment of the existing lighting. The assessment recommendation was to replace the entire electrical and tunnel lighting system. This included power distribution, electrical conduit, wiring, new mounting systems etc. To complicate matters, the existing tunnels had an existing liner over the concrete which contained asbestos. The purpose of the liner is to channel water into the drainage system which is being refined as part of a separate project. The liner was to remain, therefore, dealing with asbestos required specific measures to meet health and safety requirements. DMD undertook LSEQ evaluations to define threshold lighting levels and then developed design criteria to suit. To complete the LSEQ, we used solar plotting software to define the location of the sun to define the optimal time to do the LSEQ. A complete lighting design criteria was developed and submitted for client approval. This included emergency lighting design to NFPA 502 standards. The design included the preparation of drawings, estimates and cost estimates for tendering by the client. As part of the design innovative lighting controls were selected to improve visibility and reduce power consumption. The lighting design was done using AGI32 software. The project was tendered through a conventional bid build process and will be completed in October 2023. The project was constructed well under budget. The final testing and commissioning was completed in October...

Lighting and Signal Design Workshops

DMD undertook 3 days of training and workshops for the city of Burnaby Transportation Groups. The training and workshops were led by senior DMD engineers focusing on current and evolving street lighting and visibility concepts along with key traffic signal elements and key electrical code...

Interbay Soccer Stadium Lighting, Seattle

Whether it’s a game-winning goal in the final minute or a dramatic equalizer in a battle for first place in the standings, Interbay Stadium is synonymous with top-caliber college soccer. It is one of the finest facilities not only within the Great Northwest Athletic Conference but in all of NCAA Division II. DMD was retained by the City of Seattle Parks to upgrade the existing lighting system to LED.  We completed the design for and tender documents for the replacement of the existing metal halide sports lights with new energy efficient LED lighting with improved colour rendition and innovative glare shielding to reduce lighting impacts on local residents adjacent to the field.  Following the installation, DMD undertook light level testing and measurements to verify results. Results were improved such as the uniformity of the lighting, color rendition and reduction of lighting brightness at the adjacent residential condominium complex from 250,000 candela to under 4,000 candela. The existing soccer field lighting used 114 luminaires and we were able to reduce that to 38 luminaires resulting in a power reduction from 200 KW to...

Totem Lake Bridge Lighting

On Saturday, July 8, Kirkland will open a $22.3 million bike and pedestrian bridge that will fill in the final gap on the city’s backbone of a regional multi-use trail, the Cross Kirkland Corridor. The mostly gravel trail makes up nearly six miles of the ever-expanding East Rail corridor that is envisioned as a 42-mile connection south to Renton and north into Snohomish County. The landmark bridge features color changing LED lighting and controls designed by DMD. The lighting was designed to enhance the bridge while minimizing any impacts to drivers and the local...
