DID YOU KNOW? – LED Edition

Did You Know:

  • The LED was invented by Nick Holonyak Jr. in 1963, while he was working for General Electric.
  • A light-emitting diode, or LED, is a type of solid-state lighting that uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. Today’s LED bulbs can be six-seven times more energy efficient than conventional incandescent lights and cut energy use by more than 80 percent.
  • Consultants at a large firm is the US, have estimated that the United States could save 662 trillion British thermal units—the energy needed to power 5.8 million homes for one year—by converting all remaining non-LED outdoor lighting to LEDs.
  • LEDs contain no mercury. LEDs have a much smaller environmental impact than incandescent bulbs. Over 95% of an LED light is recyclable.
