On Saturday, July 8, Kirkland will open a $22.3 million bike and pedestrian bridge that will fill in the final gap on the city’s backbone of a regional multi-use trail, the Cross Kirkland Corridor. The mostly gravel trail makes up nearly six miles of the ever-expanding East Rail corridor that is envisioned as a 42-mile connection south to Renton and north into Snohomish County. The landmark bridge features color changing LED lighting and controls designed by DMD. The lighting was designed to enhance the bridge while minimizing any impacts to drivers and the local...

DMD is committed to reducing impacts to vulnerable road users via improved street lighting design. As such in the late summer and early fall DMD will be directly involved with a number of significant NCHRP roadway lighting research projects. These projects will have a significant impact on visibility and how roadway lighting is best applied to improve safety. We will keep you posted. Refer to the link below for some very significant lighting road safety research undertaken some of which was co-authored by DMD including research Report 940 and the 2012 & 2023 Light Handbooks & the Web-based training for FHWA Roadway Lighting Workshop. ...

The Steveston Interchange project is a key part of the Highway 99 Tunnel Program to improve travel along the Highway 99 corridor. As part of the broader program, the new Steveston Interchange will improve connections for vehicles, transit users, pedestrians, and cyclists. Opening in 2025, the modernized interchange will provide more vehicle lanes, improve transit operations, and include sidewalks and cycling lanes on both sides of the structure for the first time. The project includes replacing the existing two-lane interchange at Steveston Highway and Highway 99 with a five-lane structure. The new structure will include two eastbound lanes and three westbound lanes, including a left-turn lane onto Highway 99, to improve traffic flow. Improved ramp connections between Steveston Highway and Highway 99 to improve traffic flow and reduce queuing for vehicles. There are several transit-priority measures to allow buses to move through the interchange more efficiently, including signal priority at intersections, and a dedicated transit lane and in-lane bus stop in the northbound offramp. As of June 2023 DMD has completed the design for the lighting signals and ITS system for the interchange. Key elements included design electrical, lighting, signals and ITS systems modification to the existing ITS and counterflow system, interface with BC Ministry of Transportation, TI Corp and the City of...
