“Construction of Playland’s next new ride is ON TRACK!” a social media update reads, noting the new attraction will be “Canada’s fastest launch coaster.” The $9 million ride is slated to open in the summer of 2024. The Zamperla ride will feature an opening tunnel, an 18-metre drop, airtime hills, helices, and sweeping turns. The track is expected to be an estimated 380 metres, with a 1.3 G launch acceleration. DMD prepared electrical, lighting and communication design services for this project. DMD worked closely with the PNE and the ride manufacturer to provide power supply to the ride as well as a design for an eHouse electrical room to house the electrical distribution and ride control equipment. The state of the art propulsion system for this ride reduces the size of the electrical service by making use of a large bank of supercapacitors to provide the large surge of power required to LAUNCH the coaster from a dead stop! In addition to the ride design, DMD provided Thematic lighting and AV design for the surrounding ride area including the plaza and queuing areas. The thematic lighting is fully DMX controlled colour changing technology for unmatched rider...

Under contract with Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) Don McLean (DMD) co-authored and co-delivered an in-depth 3-day roadway lighting training course to senior FHWA road safety staff. The training course included information ranging from basic fundamentals to more advanced design methods to improve visibility. Upon the completion of the workshop/training, the participants had a basic overview of the fundamentals; such as theory, technology, standards, so the participants can provide technical assistance to State and local DOTs and convey safety messaging related to roadway lighting. The workshop was held at the Virginia Tech Transportation Smart Road Facility in Blacksburg, Virginia. High-time visibility demos based on the current research were reviewed via the Smart Road Lighting System. Following this workshop, a training guide will be developed and issued to...
