Virtual Educational Webinars

DMD have developed a series of webinars focused on specialized lighting applications such as sports lighting, tunnel lighting and roadway lighting and other presentations such as arc flash. These webinars are educational in nature, approximately one hour in length and available to our clients and Cities at no cost. To date, we have presented to over ten groups as of March 2021 with very positive feedback. Many of those who attended did not have a strong lighting background and found the presentation well explained and easy to understand. Please contact us if you are interesting in setting up an educational...

Decorative Lighting Demo Kit

In December 2021, DMD have developed a lighting demo kit featuring various luminaire types and optical systems for various demos and mock-ups for lighting architectural features. The kit includes various colour changing linear and spot type luminaires and controls for developing and showcasing lighting effects. This will allow architects and Cities to review lighting effects so DMD can better specify requirements. DMD will be displaying various colours and textures on a wall and floor to review the various lighting effects. The system is also set-up to showcase lighting controls and to present lighting effects including chasing, flashing, color changing and dimming of the...

Roadway Lighting Presentation to IES in Seattle

In November 2021, Don McLean of DMD undertook an in-person presentation focused on design methods and research aimed at improving safety for the road users via lighting design. Also reviewed the balance between the safety benefits of lighting and the impacts lighting has on the nighttime environment. Other topics of discussion included CCT along with upcoming changes in IES RP-8 along with new and developing research for sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike lanes along with a discussion on adaptive lighting controls for roadways. A link to presentation can be found below....

Luminaire Discomfort Glare Analysis

In September 2021, DMD staff undertook testing of cobra style luminaires in our warehouse facility with the goal being to assess various LED luminaire products with respect to discomfort glare. Discomfort glare is not well defined and is often the source of complaints from local residents located off the roadway. To this end, the IES has developed the Discomfort Glare in Night-Time Environments Committee of industry experts (of which DMD are a part of) to assess methods to both define and measure discomfort glare.  The testing included luminous intensity measurements using a specially designed meter to measure actual candela levels. The point of this testing was to define differences in optical systems for various suppliers’ products as viewed on and off the roadways. Luminaires were mounted at 8m and measurements taken at four locations in a dark area. In addition, luminance and illuminance measurements were taken along with a visual rating from 1 to 7. Results were presented to the IES Discomfort Glare in Night-Time Environments Committee. Results showed some differences in various products and also showed luminous intensity measurements generally correlated with...

Recognition of exemplary service to the IES

Every year, the Standards and Research Department puts together a list of IES members that have shown their dedication to the Society through their volunteer actions and participation in our work. DMD has recently been recognized for exemplary service. Please see the recognition message from the IES below: “This year, we want to acknowledge all the very hard work and efforts you have made for the IES, including taking over the Chair of the Applications Advisory Panel, working on the MLO with IDA, taking a big part in helping us navigate the waters of the ONE committee merger, and providing consistent leadership to our volunteer committees in outdoor...
